World Environment Day – How Challenger helps contribute to saving the planet

31st May 2022

World Environment Day is a United Nations day for encouraging worldwide awareness and action to protect our environment.

Here at Challenger, we care about making our planet a better place and helping in any way that we can to protect the world that we live in. As part of our values, we always try to abide by the three Rs rule, part of the waste hierarchy which is a process used to protect the environment and conserve resources through a priority approach – Reuse, Reduce and Recycle.

Here are just some of the changes and initiatives that we have in place in order to reduce our impact on the environment…

Hybrid Working

During the 2020 pandemic, like many businesses around the world, we sent all of our staff to work from home. Over the last 2 years, we have seen that working from home has not disrupted our productivity and has in fact promoted a healthier work/life balance for our team. It also reduces our carbon footprint by cutting down on commuting time.

Tesla Fleet

CO2 emissions trap heat in our atmosphere, warming up the Earth. Global warming affects environmental conditions, food and water supplies, weather patterns, and sea levels. In 2020 we replaced all of our corporate cars with Teslas, to try and reduce our own emissions. Electric vehicles accelerate the world’s transition to sustainable energy by helping to reduce CO2 emissions.

Solar Power

In 2021, we had solar panels installed on the roof of our headquarters in Deeside. Solar power is a pollution-free way to generate electricity for our office. Previously we sourced power from a power station which was contributing to greenhouse gases being emitted into the atmosphere. Using solar energy helps to drastically cut down on electricity used from the national grid.

Cycle Routes & Tree Planting

Last year we worked with Sustrans, an amazing charity who build cycle routes to improve the access, safety and public appeal of the National Cycle Network.

We worked with Sustrans on the planting of 30 trees in the cycle path area local to us – as part of our 30th-anniversary celebrations. In the future, we will also take part in helping improve the Deeside Triangle to make it a safer place for nature to flourish. This involves the team getting stuck in with litter picking, pruning and further planting to encourage a healthy ecosystem along the cycle paths.

Phone Trade In Scheme

Waste reduction and prevention involve reducing waste at the source and at Challenger we are committed to reducing our impact on the environment. That’s why from this year, in order to reduce waste, we are now offering a device trade-in scheme so that all of our customers can receive an incentive for recycling their old devices. These devices are then either properly recycled or refurbished for re-use.
