O2 Q1 update and Virgin Media potential merger

Lots of interesting news about our partner O2 today – Q1 results announced and the exciting confirmation about a merger agreement with Virgin Media.

The Q1 figures for relevance, revenues and returns all showed a year-on-year increase with customer loyalty and satisfaction remaining on top of the competition. O2 CEO Mark Evans spoke about the network’s efforts in keeping people connected during recent events and their contribution to the NHS, mentioning their doubling of network capacity, donating to areas in need and helping to keep UK businesses up and running during the Coronavirus pandemic. The press release mentions further about O2’s NHS support, their handing over of the O2 venue in London for Nightingale training, and providing connected devices to clinicians whilst also increasing bundle allowances free of charge for all frontline NHS existing customers. The fair use cap that was previously on domestic unlimited minute tariffs has also been removed for all customers to help people keep in touch.

In other news the announcement that Telefonica UK and Virgin Media have come to an agreement for a potential merger has been met with excitement within the communications industry. The move would allow for the current number one mobile network in the UK to merge with the fastest broadband provider, and give consumers access to better, more varied packages. The venture, if approved, will probably take effect around Q3 2021. The official website for the merger, www.nationalconnectivitychampion.co.uk, lists choice, value and innovation as 3 of the benefits for customers once the companies are amalgamated.
