Apple users should update now – here’s why.

17th September 2021

This week Apple has issued an emergency security patch update for its devices following the discovery of a vulnerability that enabled Israel’s NSO Group to infect Apple users’ devices without the users having to click anything.

Researchers from the University of Toronto’s Citizen Lab said the software exploit has been in use since February this year.

The urgent update that Apple released on Monday plugs a hole in the iMessage software that allowed the hackers to infiltrate a user’s phone, according to Citizen Lab.

“Attacks like the ones described are highly sophisticated, cost millions of dollars to develop, often have a short shelf life, and are used to target specific individuals,” Ivan Krstić, head of Apple Security Engineering and Architecture, said in a statement.

It’s still highly recommended that you keep your device up to date at all times, especially when emergency patches like this are released.
